Make Every Showing Count When Selling Your Home

March 31, 2026 By Connie Dolansky

When your home is on the market, every showing is an opportunity. Being ready at all times is important because even a small delay in accommodating a buyer can mean missing out on a sale. The easier it is for buyers to see your home, the more likely you are to generate strong interest.

Your real estate agent will schedule showings in advance, but flexibility is important. If you’re heading out of town for a few days or going on vacation, be sure to leave a reliable contact number. Offers can come in at any time and staying accessible helps you respond to potential buyers quickly.

Creating a comfortable environment also matters. During warmer weather, turn on the air conditioning if available, so your home feels cool and inviting. In any season, aim to make the space feel welcoming from the moment someone walks in.

Before showings, take time to secure jewelry, cash, and other valuables. If you have pets, arrange for them to be out of the home and take steps to eliminate any odors.

Once your home is ready, step away and allow your agent to sell. Giving buyers space helps them feel more at ease and better able to picture themselves living in the home.

Day-of-Showing Checklist

Presentation plays a big role in how buyers perceive your home. Focus on highlighting its best features:

  • Make sure the entrance is clean and welcoming.
  • Clear kitchen countertops for a neat, spacious look.
  • Tidy living spaces by fluffing cushions and organizing magazines.
  • Remove clutter and debris inside and outside.
  • Vacuum and clean for a fresh appearance.
  • Make all beds and straighten bedrooms.
  • Polish furniture and surfaces.
  • Open curtains and shades to let in natural light.
  • Turn on lights in every room, including the basement.
  • Let in fresh air by opening windows.
  • Add simple touches like fresh flowers to create warmth.

A well-prepared home not only shows better, but helps buyers emotionally connect to the space, bringing you one step closer to a successful sale.
