Moving In? Don’t Forget These Steps

May 19, 2025 By Connie Dolansky

Congratulations on your new home! Moving in is an exciting milestone, but before you fully settle in, there are a few important steps to take. Handling these tasks right away will help you make the transition easier.

What to Do After Moving Into Your Home

Use this checklist and these tips to avoid potential headaches.

Change the Locks and Garage Door Code

You never know who may have a copy of the keys from the previous owner, so one of the first things you should do is replace or rekey the exterior locks. If your home has an external garage door keypad, change the access code to prevent any unauthorized entry. This simple step gives you peace of mind about the security of your home.

Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are working properly. If they are outdated or not functioning properly, replace them immediately. Changing the batteries is also a good idea to make sure they are fully operational.

Inspect and Service Your HVAC System

Your heating and cooling system plays a major role in your home’s comfort. Schedule an HVAC inspection and consider setting up a service contract for regular maintenance. Replace air filters to improve indoor air quality and efficiency.

Locate the Main Water Shut-off Valve and Circuit Breaker

In case of an emergency, you need to know where the main water shut-off valve and circuit breaker are located. Familiarize yourself with the circuit breaker panel and label switches if they are not already marked. Find the main water shut-off in case of plumbing issues.

Child and Pet Proof Your Home

If you have children or pets, take steps to make your home safe for them. Install safety gates, secure heavy furniture, and cover electrical outlets.

Review Your HOA Guidelines

If your home is part of a homeowners association, obtain all the necessary information, such as gate codes, pool access instructions, trash collection details, and community guidelines.

Taking care of these items right away helps prevent potential issues and allows you to start settling into your new home. Then you can focus on making it truly feel like home.
